The Grand Egyptian Museum was conceived as a public space for meeting and cultural knowledge exchange. The main public space unfolds on the ground level, in the shade of the actual museum structure above. The public space has an intimate urban structure providing an interplay of indoor and shaded outdoor spaces.

The building appearance is articulated by a translucent, second skin reveling a hint of the inside. The different building elements appear partially but the entirety of the building is inconceivable. The translucency of the building seduces and draws the visitors inside.

The exhibition areas are located in the separate building volume above the public and commercial programs of the open ground floor. This floating exhibition volume gives shadow to the small-scale “city“ on the ground that relates in scale and structure to the neighbouring quarters of Giza. The exhibition levels have a visual relation to the pyramids of Giza. The main exhibition space is developed as an open field with a flexible exhibition structure. The visitors navigation through this 24.000 sqm large space is ensured by a personal digital assistant (PDA). Visitors can choose from different tours, topics and timeframes to customise their visit.
