The MMR House is a single-family house located in Brauweiler, a suburb of Cologne in Germany. The site is part of a new housing area between the village centre and the green fields. The master plan allows a two story house with a pitched roofs or a setback of the roof level. We have continued the  necessary setbacks in all levels to enable a continous building volume.

A building limit on the site defines the maximum build area and creates a contradiction - the garden is facing the east with less sun, while the south facing part has a minimal distance to the site limit. The contradiction made us shift the orientation of the inside to combine the south orientation with the visual relation to the garden area. The ground floor is organized in 4 parts, the entry area, the kitchen and the dinning and living room. The dinning and living room form the main space of the floor and open up to the south terrace and the garden to the east side of the site. Sliding doors between the kitchen, dinning and living room allow a flexible subdivision of the spaces.
The upper floor accommodates the children bedrooms, which have a south facing terraces. The service functions are separated by a corridor that cuts through the building volume to open up towards the west side of the house as well as the garden in the east.
The roof level accommodates the master bedroom with a roof terrace. The basement includes an office space and a guest room, both with patios.

Through the octagonal perimeter of the house the notion of front and back is dissolved and the house has a neutral orientation, only differentiated by the openings, setbacks and the activities inside.
